  • Summary
    • Menlo students Basil Merk '23, Calle Helmertz '22, and Dennis Vanin '24 won second place at the 2022 UNM Anderson Global Scaling Challenge on April 21-23 in New Mexico! They represented Menlo, competing with 23 other teams from colleges and universities from around the world. They were charged with presenting business growth and scaling strategies for three space-tech companies. Each team presented their findings to a panel of judges, including the companies' executives. While gaining invaluable experience, they also won Day 2 of the competition and secured an overall 2nd place in the final rankings. Dennis described the techniques they used as strategies that highlight "different variables including analyzing and evaluating the company's current offerings, and implementing a marketing and fundraising strategy. We also proposed possible pathways to acquire talent and how to achieve higher success with diverse staffing."

Psychological Stress on College Students during COVID-19

  • Christian Ingul & Fredrik Ingul, Seniors in Business Analytics & Finance
  • May 4, 2022, 12:45-1:45 PM PDT Brawner Boardroom & Zoom
  • Summary
    • The Coronavirus global pandemic (COVID-19) has had an unprecedented impact on college and university campuses, impacting socialization and class environments, leading to untold student challenges. Further, students, already a developmentally vulnerable population, are now facing additional new challenges, including increased mental health concerns. Data-driven decision-making at every level at the CDC aids institution administrators to reallocate resources while planning recovery and reopening of colleges in the U.S. Using a data visualization approach, the study combined current secondary research to measure which areas of higher education are most severely impacted and drive the psychological effects resulting from the pandemic. The study also provides insights into the psychological aspects of students returning to campus in person and the correlation between high impact areas and discomfort in transitioning. A common notion is that everyone is comforted by reuniting in person, but perhaps many students need more time to readjust.

Women In Leadership Development

  • Dr. Theodora Welch, Visiting Assistant Professor in Management
  • March 9, 2022, 12:45-1:45 PM PDT Brawner Boardroom & Zoom
  • Summary
    • In her upcoming Colloquium presentation, Dr. Welch will present findings on
networking and career advancement into leadership positions. Because of the way
social networks evolve, ‘weak ties’ between people often form bridges between clusters
of more strongly connected individuals and thus serve as important conduits of novel
information, such as job opportunities. The ‘strength of weak ties' thesis has proven to
have important and enduring implications for getting a job and getting a leadership
position. Yet, forming and accessing work-related networks can be regarded as a
gendered issue. Do women need different networks than men? Together, we will
explore these issues and consider the latest research and what it means for practice.
